How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an audi a1 car key Engine Speed Sensor (G28). Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. 5. Tachometer
